WC2018 – The Rules

How to play

1. Select 10 of the teams below from the table shown, your selections must include no more than 4 favourites and at least 2 Outsiders. I have shown their current FIFA world rankings in brackets.

Favourites Outsiders
Group A Uruguay (17) Egypt (30) Saudi Arabia (63) Russia (65)
Group B Portugal (3) Spain (8) Iran (34) Morocco (48)
Group C France (7) Peru (10) Denmark (19) Australia (43)
Group D Argentina (4) Croatia (18) Iceland (21) Nigeria (41)
Group E Brazil (2) Switzerland (11) Costa Rica (22) Serbia (38)
Group F Germany (1) Mexico (16) Sweden (25) South Korea (62)
Group G Belgium (5) England (12) Tunisia (28) Panama (49)
Group H Poland (6) Colombia (13) Senegal (32) Japan (44)

2. Arrange these in your order of preference on the grid below using just the first three letters of each team (check the entry form, in some cases it is not the first three letters). I have given an example on the first line. Please clear this example before completing your entry.

3. Enter the number of goals that you think will be scored in the competition, as well as your name. If you want only to be identified by Pseudonym then enter this too. The number of goals will be used as a tie-breaker in the event of people being level on points.

Scoring

After each game, each team will be awarded 1 point per goal scored, plus a bonus of 3 points for a win (or 1 point for a draw). These points will be awarded to you times the multiplier corresponding to the team selected. The multiplier is shown in brackets in the example below.

Team 1 Team 2 Team 3 Team 4 Team 5 Team 6 Team 7 Team 8 Team 9 Team 10
GER (10) BRA (9) BEL( 8) ARG (7) COL (6) MEX (5) SPA (4) ENG (3) AUS (2) JPN (1)

If you look at the example above, you have Brazil as 2nd choice and Australia as 9th choice and Australia beat Brazil 3-2. You would get 18 points for Brazil 2 (goals) x 9 (multiplier) = 18. You would get 12 points for Australia 3 (goals) + 3 (win) x 2 (multiplier) = 12. So a total of 30 points for the match. In cases where games go into extra time, the score at the end of EXTRA time (i.e. 120 minutes, but excluding any Penalty shoot-out) will count for goals bonuses and each team will get the 1 point draw bonus. Likewise for the tie-breaker goals scored in extra-time (but NOT penalty shoot-outs) will count also. This method of scoring applies to all 64 games in the tournament. In cases of a game being re-played for any reason the scores in the replayed game will count.
